Move to a purpose-built platform

Not everything can be handled by tightening processes or reconfiguring ERP capabilities. Sometimes the bigger problem is not a missing capability on either side of finance. It is the lack of connection between the systems, people and decisions that determine how cash enters and leaves the business
When the pieces just aren’t coming together to form a full perspective, it is time to consider a third option, a purpose-built financial automation platform.
A modern finance automation platform can connect the workflows surrounding both sides of cash movement, from purchasing, approvals and receiving through invoicing and payment, while also connecting invoice presentment, collections, disputes and cash application.
The goal is to remove the manual bridges that make finance reconstruct what is happening between the point where cash is expected or committed and the point where it actually enters or leaves the business.
Connect the work around the transaction
There are a number of steps that have to happen before a clean transaction is ready to hit the general ledger or cash can be applied.
Between the first decision to spend or bill and the point where cash actually moves, there is a gulf of potential issues if the surrounding context is fragmented. A purchase may pass through approvals, POs, receiving and invoice processing, while a receivable may involve customer history, sales notes, outstanding invoices, disputes, promises to pay and questions. Connecting those pieces gives finance the context to understand what happened, what is happening now and what needs attention next without reconstructing the story every time something goes wrong.
Keep the ERP at the center without asking it to do everything
Adding a financial automation platform does not mean ripping out the ERP.
ERPs can remain the system of record for financial data. The dedicated platform is there to manage the workflows, controls, and interactions surrounding that record.
Separating the two lets the ERP continue posting the financial transaction without forcing additional custom development, integrations or manual workarounds into the core system.
Know when the third path starts to make sense
A dedicated platform becomes worth considering when the gaps are no longer isolated.
When workload is growing faster than headcount, approvals and exceptions require constant chasing, late payments and disputes are mounting and finance has to move between systems just to understand what is happening, you may no longer have a series of isolated process problems. You have a connectivity problem.
Don’t automate the patchwork
A dedicated platform doesn’t mean you simply automate the processes exactly as they exist today.
You need to decide which controls actually matter, take out the unnecessary steps, and then connect the remaining process around them.
Otherwise, you risk replacing manual fragmentation with automated fragmentation.
Process improvement can strengthen what already works. The ERP can extend capabilities it supports cleanly. A finance automation platform becomes relevant when the bigger problem is keeping cash movement, context and action connected across the collect-to-pay journey without building more complexity around it.
